Precision Treatment for Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer
At Metis Health, we support access to advanced, non-invasive treatment options for patients diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.
Brachytherapy with Rhenium-SCT® is a highly targeted radiation therapy designed to treat superficial skin cancers with precision—delivering effective results while preserving healthy surrounding tissue.
Rhenium-SCT is a form of contact brachytherapy that uses the beta emitting radioisotope Rhenium-188. A clinician places a prepared compound in contact with the skin lesion using a dedicated applicator. The radiation primarily affects shallow tissue and is planned to target the lesion while limiting exposure to surrounding structures.
Independent summaries note that the beta particles from Rhenium-188 have a limited penetration in tissue of around a few millimetres, which is why this technique is considered for superficial skin lesions.

Steps of the Rhenium-SCT®: Simple & Safe
Mark
Your clinician carefully outlines the area to be treated after confirming the diagnosis and measuring the field.
Cover
The surrounding skin is protected with a clear barrier so only the planned area is exposed.
Apply
The Rhenium-188 compound is placed over the marked field using a dedicated applicator. It stays in position for the prescribed time while staff monitor you.
Treatment time
Time in the chair varies with the plan for your lesion. Many sessions are completed in a single visit. Your clinician will let you know the expected duration before starting.
Follow up
You will receive written aftercare guidance and a review is arranged to check healing and discuss any next steps. Contact the clinic sooner if you have concerns.
